Fushimi Inari is a Shinto shrine located in Kyoto.  A pair of foxes (kitsune), regarded as the messengers, are seen here at the main gate.  The earliest structures here were built in 711 on the Inariyama hill in southwestern Kyoto, but the shrine was re-located in 816 on the request of the monk Kūkai.  The main shrine structure was built in 1499.  This rōmon is one of two types of two-storied gate used in Japan.  Originally developed by Buddhist architecture, it is now used at both Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines.
